There’s something in the air around the Town of Saugerties; a scent that’s easy to identify and hard to miss. The aroma of fresh garlic emanating from Cantine Field in Saugerties can mean only one thing: the 2011 Hudson Valley Garlic Festival! This extremely popular annual festival features all things garlic, and we mean all things. From garlic ice cream (yes you’re reading that correctly!), to garlic fudge, to humans dressed as dancing garlic cloves, the Hudson Valley Garlic Festival is yet another lively event unique to the Hudson Valley Region. It is another shining example of an active community that characterizes not only Saugerties but most all of Ulster County.

Taking place this Saturday and Sunday, the 2011 Garlic Festival started in 1989 as a backyard get-together. This year’s festival is expected to draw record crowds, which spells great news for local businesses. Many of the vendors at the Garlic Festival have been coming for years, a testament to the great exposure the festival provides. If garlic isn’t your fav, you don’t have to eat the garlic fudge. As long as they sell at least one garlic-related item, food vendors are free to present all of their tasty treats to the hungry public. This makes for a weekend of great eating!

A Pride of the Community, 20 Years and Running...

Once you’ve eaten your fill of garlic candy bars, you can enjoy a wide variety of entertainment from local bands and dance troupes. There will be free cooking demonstrations and workshops on the medicinal benefits of garlic. If you like to shop, feel free to browse the assorted garlic-themed crafts such as kitchen accessories & hand-made pottery. This is a family-friendly event, run by volunteers, and creating a sense of pride among the Saugerties community during its twenty plus years in existence.

Saugerties NY real estate is quite diverse.  It has the mountainous rural type properties, but also has great village hot spots close to all conveniences.  Saugerties is located at the northeastern section of Ulster County, borders the Hudson River, and is only a quick drive from other well-known areas of Kingston and Woodstock.  Plenty to do in Saugerties, being close to major ski centers, and being blessed with some excellent Esopus and Sawkill Creek access points for boating and kayaking.  For these and any other cool Ulster County events & happenings please continue to explore our blog!
