America's Great Water Coalition, an alliance of regional and national organizations that work towards river and watershed restoration, recently named the Hudson Estuary and watershed one of "America's Great Waters". More than just a fancy title, this designation officially recognizes the river's national importance and will increase federal support for Hudson River restoration and development projects. It is a victory for Hudson River advocates, who for decades have been working to repair the damage done to the Hudson River by pollution. Their dedication makes the Hudson River, according to some, the birthplace of the modern environmental movement. National Recognition for the Hudson River
The Hudson Estuary is large and wide. It stretches from the Adirondacks to the Verrazano Narrows. It's only natural that this legendary waterway receives national recognition. Aside from the Mississippi, the Hudson River may be the most significant river in our nation's history. It was first discovered by Henry Hudson, an english sailor hired by the Dutch to find a shortcut to India. Hudson got as far north as Albany, claiming land on behalf of the Dutch as he went. Soon after the Hudson River was considered the gateway into America's interior by all Europeans and was subsequently colonized and fought over by the Dutch, French, English, and the new guys: the Americans. For 2012, this recognition is critical in the ongoing effort to restore the Hudson Estuary. On a local level, riverfront real estate in Saugerties NY as well as Marlboro and Esopus NY will benefit through continued environmental support given to the Hudson River. Restaurants along the Hudson, as well as marinas and other local businesses will hopefully see an economic boost from the river being named one of, "America's Great Waters." Though perhaps this designation can be seen as a long overdue, it is an honor and a very positive chapter in the history of the Hudson River Valley!
